  • Overview

    As a Research and Development Manager at Scentsy, Inc., you will lead the Personal Care Formulations team to develop and improve Scentsy’s personal care and home care formulas.

    Responsibilities

    • Formulate and facilitate the development of innovative products, line extensions, and product improvements in personal care and home care products in line with company objectives.
    • Research chemicals, such as detergents, non-sulfates surfactants, silicones, hair polymers, solvents, delivery system, preservatives, emollients, associative thickeners, anti-oxidants, to create innovative formulations, prepare actual batches, and test them for functionality and stability.
    • Identify and maintain external partnerships to develop new technologies and conceptual ideas in personal care and home care.
    • Provide technical support to manufacturing on new and troubleshoot existing products.
    • Assist QA(Quality Assurance)/QC(Quality Control) in development of test methods for raw materials and finished products.
    • Create specifications for raw materials and laboratory, scale-up, and production formulation batches.
    • Assist with production testing.
    • Assist with evaluation of the new product, packaging, and equipment needs.
    • Coordinate stability, microbiological, safety, and efficacy tests.
    • Maintain constant cross-functional communication with Legal, Research and Development (R&D), and Scentsy Manufacturing teams.
    • Clearly define assignments with deadlines and expectations.
    • Manage staff by selecting, orientating, training, coaching, counseling, and developing personal growth opportunities for employees.
    • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
    • Maintain laboratory equipment, managing preventive maintenance and calibrations.
    • Oversee consumables supply inventories and create requisitions to replenish as needed.
    • Interface with vendors to discuss new and changing technologies and how to incorporate them into Scentsy’s formulation and processes.
    • Work with the Marketing team on efficacy parameters and testing protocols with acceptance criteria.
    • Perform other assigned tasks and requirements as needed.   

    In this role, you must utilize clear and direct written and verbal communication skills; apply strong leadership skills to motivate, stimulate, and inspire employees to maximize their efforts in productivity and quality; be able to lift up to 40 pounds; determine smell and color hues; frequently read, comprehend, write and perform complex mathematic calculations, communicate orally, and reason and analyze; and you will work at a computer station and view a computer screen for extended periods of time.

    Qualifications

    • 5 years of experience in formulation, production or development of personal care (skin, body and hair care) products.
    • 5 years of experience in formulations of emulsions, dispersions, and suspensions chemistry, which help to formulate a variety of products, including cleansing, beautifying, anti-aging and fragrance products.
    • 2 years of experience in managing products from concept to launch, including scale up and transition to manufacturing.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced laboratory environment, working safely with laboratory equipment, chemicals, and manufacturing raw materials, including fragrances.
    • Laboratory background in analytical instrumentation with working knowledge with ESCO kettle, Sylverson Homogenizer, Greerco Homogenizer, Rheomat & Brookfield Viscometer, pH meter and UV-Vis Spectroscopy.
    • Working knowledge of computers and applicable software including Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Bachelor’s degree in either Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacy or a related field.
